Alumni upgrade desks and chairs

High
School students got a gift of more than 30 classroom desks and chairs
Friday as part of a $3,000 donation from the school's alumni association.
"It's a way to supplement some of the needs of the high school,"
said Jim Brady Alumni Association president and founder, who graduated
from Walpole High in 1972.
The donation has helped fill a shortage of desks and chairs at the
school, Principal Frank Sambuceti said Friday, and will fully equip
one social studies classroom.
"We actually have already purchased them," said Brady.
"There are 30 desks, enough to fill an entire classroom."
Sambuceti said the need for classroom desks and chairs is still
great at the high school, despite the recent completion of extensive
renovations.
"We're still short," Sambuceti said. "But it's a
big help. They're in the room already, in a social studies classroom.
We probably need another three or four classrooms to fill with additional
furniture, to address a need and to bring us up to our increased
enrollment."
Brady said the Alumni Association, which he formed five years ago,
has been actively raising money to fund unmet purchasing needs at
the high school. They group recently donated books to the library
media center, sponsored scholarships for high school graduates and
run career days for high school students.
"We talk to the principal to see what they need, and the principal
said he really needs some desks and chairs," said Brady. "We
thought it would be a nice opportunity to heighten awareness of
what the alumni association does, and what the high school needs."
Most of the alumni group's funds are raised through donations and
an annual dinner dance, usually held in November.
